Accessibility Issues When Using Remote Proctoring

As with all remote proctoring solutions, some authentication settings in Proctorio will create accessibility issues for certain students. In these cases, instructors would be advised to exempt that student from using Proctorio and seek an alternative solution.

For blind or low-vision users:

  • The ID Card Scan process and instructions are entirely vision-based. Blind users are unable to determine where or how to hold the card; and low-vision users cannot read the manual scan instructions due to poor color contrast.

  • The Webcam Image test (part of the pre-check process) is entirely vision-based. It cannot be successfully completed independently by blind users and is extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, for low-vision users.

  • Completing the room scan is not possible for blind users and is difficult for low vision users.

For users with limited mobility:

  • Some users with mobility difficulties may not be able to hold their card during the ID Card Scan process.

  • Completing the room scan is not possible for some individuals who may have difficulties with mobility.

  • Accidental actions during quiz-taking can cause test-takers to be ejected from the quiz which requires going through all of the pre-checks again.

If needed, instructors can easily deactivate Proctorio proctoring for individual students in their class. Instructions given on the Enabling Proctorio page.

Exempting Students from Proctorio Proctoring

If you need to turn off proctoring for individual students, return to the test itself, click the edit menu arrow, and click on "Proctorio Availability Exceptions". You can uncheck boxes for individual students under the webcam icon. When you click "Change Proctorio Access Settings" you will be shown a unique exam password that should be given to the proctoring center or live proctor for the students for which you are creating exceptions.
